Tourists have been coming to St Andrews for hundreds of years. In mediaeval times they came as pilgrims to worship in the great cathedral. Nowadays they come either to play golf or to enjoy the fine architectural and historical heritage our town possesses.

The St Andrews Tourism Initiative has also made life easier for tourists by placing information boards in strategic places around the town. Look for a flagpole flying a Saltire and it will have around its base tourist information including a town centre map showing where you are and interesting historical facts.

Also to be found are plaques on or near buildings that give more information about their historical significance such as this plaque in St Marys Place opposite the Students' Union commemorating early photography in St Andrews performed by Thomas Rodger (1833 - 1883).
